KMRE News interns come from Whatcom Community College, Western Washington University, and other educational organizations around Whatcom County. Requirements and hours vary depending on the internship position.
Volunteer
We are a community radio station and all members of the community are invited to join the effort. Our volunteers range from 83 to 14. Volunteers are required to pass a background check. Hours are negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
Position Overview

Reporter
Investigate, research, and fact-check information, uncover interesting stories, report the news, book guests, conduct interviews, write scripts, prepare press releases, and handle administrative work. As a broadcast journalism intern, you observe and participate in the planning and production of a TV show or radio program. Broadcast journalism can occur during any time of the day, and the tasks vary day-by-day. Reporters will be assigned a general beat as well as specific stories and create 1-3 audio stories per week. Experience writing news stories a must. Experience with Audacity and audio recording a plus.
Producer
Are you interested in audio storytelling and a career in radio or podcasting?
KMRE’s news producer internship is a Bellingham, Washington–based opportunity to launch a new and exciting career. News producers are tasked with creating a 5-to-7-minute newscast that is broadcast every weekday afternoon at 3, 4 and 5 p.m. First and foremost, the news producer will research story ideas, conduct interviews and write the daily newscast every weekday morning. They’ll keep their finger on the pulse on Bellingham and Whatcom County news as well as relevant regional and state news. They will also get to explore their personal interests by producing standalone features, such as local stories about music, wildlife, sports, business and more.
Adherence to the SPJ Code of Ethics and solid news judgment is a must, as is the ability to work collaboratively and creatively while meeting deadlines on a hybrid team using Slack, Google Drive and Audacity. Interns will be trained in using audio editing software, recording with equipment and Clean Feed and how to write for radio broadcasts. What candidates must already have is integrity, curiosity, an understanding of the tenets of journalism and love for all things radio. (NPR geeks, we’re looking at you!)
While hours are often flexible, weekday morning availability for this position is nonnegotiable; the newscast must be written by noon so that it can be recorded to air by our hosts for the 3 p.m. broadcast. News producers will also have the opportunity to read the news.
Anchor
• Interpret and present news stories so that viewers or listeners can better understand them
• Record the script and edit in any external audio packages
• Meet recording deadlines and upload the final file for playback
• Collaborate with the production team to keep technical standards high
• Ensure broadcast is within time limits
• Be engaging on the air
• Interact with reporters while on the air
• Occasionally conduct live interviews with experts who can provide additional information or opinions
Marketing/PR
The KMRE Marketing intern will assist with the planning of marketing events. They also help create media kits, plan publicity strategies and campaigns, write and produce presentations, articles, press releases and social media posts. They also help design or project manage the production of visual communications and digital content. The Marketing Intern will help deal with inquiries from the public, the press, and related organizations.
Social Media Producer
Social Media Producers are specifically tasked with creating content for KMRE’s social channels. Their role is to craft and target content that fits within the station’s branding, strategy and editorial ambitions. They will keep across best practice, and work with partners to share or otherwise enhance content.
Your daily tasks might involve:

• Feeding into strategy conversations, both on a brand and a business level
